Recent Developments on Election Integrity

Election administration and the processes that ensure every lawfully cast vote counts remain in the spotlight. Below are several developments affecting Wisconsin:

Legal Orders on Voter Verification

A Wisconsin judge ruled that the state must verify citizenship for all registered voters before the February primary, aiming to confirm only eligible voters remain on the rolls. Republican lawmakers and activists have supported this move as an election integrity safeguard, while some administrators caution about implementation challenges.

Voter Registration Data Dispute with DOJ

The U.S. Department of Justice sued Wisconsin after state election officials declined to turn over detailed voter registration files, citing state privacy laws. This dispute is part of a broader national effort by the DOJ to access  voter data to ensure only legal citizens are voting in U.S. Elections.

Election Commission & Policy Changes

State election administrators have adopted new procedures and oversight orders intended to prevent ballot errors following oversights in past elections, particularly in major municipalities like Madison.

Legislators are also weighing updates to voting laws, including efforts to restructure early voting access across the state.

New Voter ID Law

Last year, Wisconsin voters approved a constitutional amendment requiring photo ID to vote, marking a major election integrity milestone that codifies identification requirements into the state Constitution. Here is why that matters:

  • Accurate voter rolls through verification and maintenance, ensuring only eligible voters are active.

  • Clear procedures for absentee, in-person, and early voting that protect ballot security and counting accuracy.

  • Transparent oversight of election administration, strengthened by both judicial rulings and administrative actions.

  • Improved civic participation, empowering voters to know when and how to cast their ballots.

With multiple federal and state contests on the ballot, 2026 will be a defining year for Wisconsin voters to shape their government and reaffirm confidence in democratic processes.
